Wauwatosa School District – Wisconsin

The Impact of CPI Training

  • More positive school culture
  • Decrease in disciplinary issues
  • Increase in academic achievement
  • All 13 schools trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention®

Situation

The Wauwatosa School District in Wisconsin was looking to create a cohesive approach to improve the safety and academic success of students across 13 schools. While the district already had Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs in place, staff and leadership were seeking more effective ways to achieve their goals.

Solution

Director of Student Success Emilie O’Connor was selected as Wauwatosa School District’s CPI Certified Instructor, leading Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Training for all staff.

Results

Since integrating CPI training with PBIS, the Wauwatosa School District has experienced significant improvements in staff and student success. O’Connor shared that Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Training has helped foster the commitment to implement PBIS and CPI system-wide and position Wauwatosa as a role model for PBIS efforts.

“On average, one office referral takes a minimum of 10 minutes of the teacher's time, in addition to 20 minutes for the student and 20 minutes for the administrator—and that's not even counting the time lost for the rest of the class. CPI training has helped our district regain hundreds of hours to dedicate to our core mission. Teachers can focus on actual teaching again.”
