Introducing CPI’s 3rd Edition Training
In 2024, Crisis Prevention Institute International (CPI) is officially launching 3rd Edition training.
As the worldwide leader in de-escalation training. CPI is committed to continually improving training content to match the needs of the people being served.
Since the establishment of MAPA® in 1988 we have continued to update and improve our core programme to better align with RRN standards.

Safety Intervention 3rd Edition training addresses the needs of our Certified Instructors and their end learners while incorporating the latest research on trauma and brain science. All while making content easier to teach, learn, and apply.
“We’ve been working on this for a little over two years now, and it’s exciting to be so close to launch,” said Tony Jace, CEO of Crisis Prevention Institute. “I know our Certified Instructors and end learners are really going to appreciate the updates we’ve made because most of our new content came directly from things they were asking for.”
Easier to Teach
CIs go above and beyond to support their coworkers by providing them with CPI’s evidence-based de-escalation training. But being a CI is not their first responsibility—they work in hospitals, social care, schools, retail, and beyond. The updates made in 3rd Edition were done to make content easier to teach out of respect for the schedules of CIs and the people they train.

One of the updates for CIs will be the addition of new case studies and real-world examples.
Patricia Bosco, who helped create 3rd Edition content, explained,
“In previous editions, it was left to the instructors to bring in some concepts and connections. This left them having to remember additional content not in the instructor guide. With 3rd Edition, we’ve brought all of that in. This really is a single resource they can use to be able to easily deliver all the materials.”
Chris Sheehan, International Director of Training, adds: ‘We have included through video clips the true experiences of individuals with lived experience. They speak to their experience in times of distress and how professionals can help or hinder their recovery in a crisis moment. They also speak to the trauma restrictive interventions can have on them - not just in the moment, but how they can trigger past experiences and even how after the restrictive intervention has been removed, it can feel like it is continuing. These are very powerful messages to us as professionals who work with vulnerable individuals.”
Another change is the addition of a new module, Understanding Behaviour and its Risk.
This module speaks to the brain-body connection and what happens during moments of crisis. And while topics surrounding trauma and brain science are complex, the concepts in 3rd Edition offer a ground-level introduction— providing staff with enough understanding to apply concepts without going into doctorate-level explanations.
Throughout 3rd Edition, the same updates that make it easier for CIs to lead instruction make it easier for end learners to understand.
Easier to Learn
“Adults process and take in knowledge very differently,” Patricia Bosco shared. “They bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experiences that need to be leveraged to create a truly effective training. The instructional theory that this programme is based on is called constructivism—it’s where learners create their own learning experiences by building on the knowledge and experiences they have.”
Individuals who have participated in previous editions of training will notice that 3rd Edition utilises participants’ prior knowledge to deepen their understanding of CPI de-escalation concepts. It also includes much more space for conversations among participants.
“Learning in 3rd Edition is much more social. They get to learn from one another and share their experiences,” said Patricia. “The instructor is not seen as the single source of knowledge. Adult learners need to be internally motivated and that is brought in with the real-life examples—this helps every learner feel like the content applies to them.”
The simplified and inclusive language also aids in easier understanding for end learners. “We’re making sure the words we use and how we use them are up-to-date and person-centred,” shared Karen.
Easier to Apply
The inclusive language in 3rd Edition is one way that content has been made easier to apply.
This is because, as Patricia explains, “All of our materials always need to be inclusive to be accessible and we want each learner to feel like the content really applies to them.”
And representation matters—when participants see themselves or their real-world situations incorporated in training, it helps them easily connect with content and apply what they learn.
“This edition is very much based on professional reflection and has a clear focus on what learners can implement immediately once they return to working with the people they care for”, Chris notes.
CPI training also offers different levels of training that allow all staff to be trained regardless of their role or risk level. And 3rd Edition training applies to the entire suite of CPI’s core programmes. This makes it easy for CPI concepts to be applied throughout the workplace.
