Hands clasped together

Investing in CPI training is an important decision—one that can have lasting benefits for your organization. Here are seven great questions we frequently hear from our customers (and the answers, of course!).

Is CPI training evidence-based?

Absolutely.

With more than 11 million professionals trained across a spectrum of industries, the list of measurable outcomes achieved with CPI solutions is constantly growing. A few quick highlights include:

  • Dr. Sally Gillam’s quality improvement study in the Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal: she verified that Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training effectively decreased Code Purples, improved collaboration across departments, and successfully coordinated staff skills and confidence to support optimal patient outcomes.
  • Therapy Management Corporation’s (TMC) outstanding staff and resident outcomes after org-wide implementation of CPI training: not only did staff confidence and skill improve, but residents also saw improvements in activities of daily living and reduction in the off-label use of psychotropic medications after Dementia Capable Care training.
  • Pine Hills Youth Correctional Facility’s reduced worker compensation claims: after CPI training, they saw claims plummet by 82% and tracked a $230,000 drop in their average annual financial liability—and they’ve sustained these outcomes over time.
  • School District U-46’s success in reducing out-of-school suspensions by 75%: after CPI training, challenging and disruptive behaviors dropped measurably, culminating in a 90% drop in assaults on staff. School climate and culture improved, which have boosted staff confidence and student performance—thanks to more direct instruction time.

If we implement CPI training, what kind of ROI can our organization hope to achieve?

The sky’s the limit when it comes to the benefits of bringing CPI training to your organization—but the extent to which training pays for itself for itself is ultimately up to you.

In addition to sustainably reducing worker compensation, liability, and their associated expenses, professionals who receive CPI training extensively report improved skills and confidence that empower them in their daily work. This reduces turnover and improves organizational stability.

With strategies that effectively prevent and safely manage a range of crisis behaviors, professionals can facilitate better outcomes for the populations in their care—which ultimately boosts organizational performance in a measurable way.

For example, at St. David’s South Austin Hospital, it cost just 1% of annual payroll to reduce workplace violence by 23%—results that are not only amazing for year one, but results that you can replicate at your organization.

Are there training solutions available for everyone on staff?

Definitely.

At CPI, we blend time-tested, evidence-based approaches with thoughtful innovation to offer the most inclusive suite of training solutions possible, so that we can help a diverse range of industries build safer workplaces and environments of care.

Our training coordinators will collaborate with you to accurately assess your organization’s unique risks and responsibilities, determine the right mix of solutions for each level of staff, and identify the best implementation method to achieve optimal results.

Can CPI training help our organization fulfill legal or regulatory expectations within our industry?

It certainly can. You’ll definitely want to speak with us in detail about what compliance issues you’re hoping to resolve through training, so that we can help you find the solution that’s the best fit.

Our training satisfies many of the best practices recommended by OSHA and NIOSH, but we also strive to maintain a library of relevant legal alignments to help professionals understand how to fulfill policy requirements. We take pride in developing training solutions that can satisfy CMS guidelines, Joint Commission standards, and Department of Education recommendations—to name just a few.

And all CPI products and resources are developed to support inclusive and sustainable cultures of safety in the environment where our training is implemented.

Will CPI training save us time?

Without a doubt.

In fact, the time you spend training ends up being a pretty tiny fraction of the time you’ll save once you’re trained.

Our customers consider CPI training a time-saver because they learn how to proactively address Precipitating Factors that can escalate into crisis. When you introduce CPI training into your organization, you’ll learn the strategies to improve staff coordination—resulting in a safer, more streamlined, more supportive work environment.

  • Teachers report they gain more direct instruction time once they’ve got CPI in their toolkit.
  • Nurses report success delivering care more safely in the ED after they’ve received CPI training.
  • Dementia care partners tell us that CPI training empowers them to address even the most challenging aspects of memory care in a constructive way.

Will CPI training help us improve the way we connect with the people in our care?

100%.

Possibly the best result you’ll ever get from CPI training is the ability to foster a more constructive and caring connection with everybody you encounter—at work and beyond. Training empowers you to truly support the Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecuritySM of those you serve. Take a look:

Is CPI really just a restraint company?

Nope.

But we do teach restraint.

Michael Somers is a school psychologist and Master Level CPI Certified Instructor, and he sums up our perspective on restraint perfectly:

“The best use of ‘restraint’ isn’t physical—it’s restraining ourselves from reacting instinctively, and instead learning how to talk to people. How to listen to their issues and concerns. How to identify in ourselves what frustrates and drives our emotions—and being empathetic and nonjudgmental to others in turn. ‘Restraint’ begins a long time before any physical contact is made—if our attitude is one of prevention and support.”

CPI training can include physical components that emphasize safe physical disengagement, and holding an individual for the purposes of protecting their safety. But CPI training is also very successfully used in a variety of “hands-off” settings where physical contact, including restraint, is banned entirely.

Ultimately, all CPI training is oriented to maximize the physical and psychological well-being of both professional staff and the individuals that they serve.

Different customers have different needs—but one thing unites every CPI customer. Everybody deserves Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecuritySM. Making these values accessible and sustainable is always a worthy investment.
